Charlie Weiss: An in depth look at football's larger than life coaches

Our first look at one of football's larger than life coaches begins with Charlie Weiss. Perhaps best known for leading Notre Dame to a couple BCS bowls before leaving for the Kansas City Chiefs for a year, then offensive coordinator at Florida for a year, and now, finally at Kansas; Weiss has always been regarded as an offensive guru, even making Matt Cassel look good for a year.

Weiss arrived at Notre Dame  in 2004 to replace wining head coach Tyrone Willingham in what was at the time a controversial Thing. His first two years were great, with the Irish going to consecutive BCS bowls but losing both times. The next three years though the Irish didn't have a winning record and ultimately Weiss was fired and replaced by noted scoundrel Brian Kelly.

Weiss and co-defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta meeting with a potential recruit.

2009 saw Weiss shipped back to the NFL where he made Matt Cassel look decent for a year, as stated above, and the Chiefs went to the playoffs. However this would be short lived as Weiss longed to return to the college game for some reason where he had limited success...

Weiss dialing up a crucial call on 4th and 1.

And so towards the end of 2010 Weiss took over offensive play calling duties under new head coach Will Muschamp at Florida and promptly turned the highly touted John Brantley into a big turd. The Gators ended up going 8-5.

The real reason why Florida has switched to a power run game is because Weiss ate all the offense.
I guess there's something about Kansas that Weiss likes because now he's head coach of the dismal Jayhawks football team. Weiss' genius has lead the Jayhawks to an overachieving 1-6 record with the lone win coming against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits of the vaunted Missouri Valley Football Conference. (To be fair the Jackrabbits actually have a good record right now at 5-2)

Weiss allegedly told a recruit, "Get in my belly!"
Where will Charlie take his talents next? Unfortunately we will need to weight another month or two to find out.

  1. From what I heard, I think he made a good call on that 4th and 1.
