big 10: no more FCS scrimmages
Michigan need not apply.
On a recent radio broadcast Barry Alvarez, the Wisconsin athletic director announced that the Big 10 schools had agreed to not schedule FCS teams anymore.
Schools schedule these teams usually as extra practices or to pad their schedules. Usually these games end up being laughers as the D1 school steamrolls the other team by like 50-0.
I think pretty much everyone applauds this move.
I wouldn't say they these games were all bad. They did provide the FCS school with some economic aid as well as letting those players be seen on national television. Though I don't think most people would leap at the chance to be humiliated on national TV.
A lot of schools in the Big 10 already have limited FCS teams scheduled. Penn State doesn't have any scheduled while Ohio State and Wisconsin only have one upcoming. Others like Iowa have one scheduled for the next several years, to be fair that level of competition is probably pretty fair for them.
It's likely that this will go into effect for the 2014 season when Rutgers and Maryland officially join the conference.
The question now is when and if the SEC follows suit. Consider Alabama's schedule last season that included thrillers against Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and Western Carolina. This season they play Georgia State and Chattanooga.
Ohio State on the other hand only has one FCS school this season, Buffalo and also has upcoming series with Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, and Texas. Just saying.

Thank God. The Big Ten should also stop scheduling so many MAC teams, though the MAC is actually getting better these days.
